BROOMFIELD, Colo., October 25, 2000 – Level 3 Communications, Inc., (Nasdaq:LVLT) today announced it is now offering Internet and communications services in four additional markets in Germany.
The company has opened advanced data centers in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Dusseldorf, bringing to five the total number of markets Level 3 currently serves in Germany. Level 3\'s pan-European fiber optic network now connects the company\'s data centers in London, Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and Dusseldorf.
"We believe the opening of these four new Gateways, along with our multi-conduit, continuously upgradeable pan-European network, will play a significant role in enabling the continuing development of the new Internet economy in Germany and throughout the European Union," said Gail Smith, president of Level 3 Europe. "We expect over time to be able to drive down bandwidth costs substantially in Europe. As we continue to drive down costs, we anticipate even greater demand for innovative Internet and communications services, many of which depend on removing the current cost constraints of transporting information."
Level 3 presently offers services in 52 markets in the United States, Europe and Asia via advanced data centers called "Gateways." The Gateways serve as portals to the network and provide a secure environment in which IP intensive companies can physically locate their equipment, and connect directly to Level 3\'s global broadband network.
The facilities also house Level 3\'s own equipment and offer customers interconnection with the public Internet and other long distance networks. The company has more than 5.5 million square feet of data center space around the world, and has pre-funded the acquisition and construction of another 1.0 million square feet.
Level 3\'s pan-European network is connected to the company\'s own metropolitan networks in five of the nine European markets the company presently serves. Level 3 will connect all nine European markets, via undersea, intercity and metropolitan fiber optic networks, to 41 North American markets and two Asian markets currently served by Level 3.
Level 3\'s continuously upgradeable network features advanced technology that provides high quality, low cost services that enable IP intensive businesses to add value and, in turn, deliver their services to end-users, including residential customers.
Level 3 enables IP intensive companies to grow more rapidly by providing infrastructure and network services to help meet increasing demand for e-commerce, streaming audio and video, and many other Internet and communications services.
