BROOMFIELD, Colo., Dec. 19, 2000 – Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:LVLT) today announced that it now offers bandwidth services in more than 150 Internet and communications centers in North America, Europe and Asia. The technology facilities comprise over 50 advanced Level 3 data centers and 100 Internet data centers and other communications-intensive facilities not owned by the company. Through these data centers, and many other locations around the world, Level 3 serves more than 2,400 communications intensive customers, with over 600 (3)CrossRoads® customers among them, including Akamai, Microsoft, EarthLink and Yahoo Broadcast. Other services Level 3 offers from the facilities include (3)Link® Private Line, (3)Link Dark Fiber, (3)Link Global Wavelength, (3)Voice®, (3)Connect® Modem and (3)Center® Colocation. Not all services, however, are available in all facilities.
"We\'ve been very aggressive about extending the reach of our low-cost bandwidth services to communications intensive companies in facilities that give us the greatest opportunity to drive traffic onto our metropolitan, long-haul and undersea networks," said Lee Jobe, president of Global Operations for Level 3. "With our network nearly complete and services available in more than 150 Internet and data communications centers, we expect to see significant increases in the amount of traffic traveling on our network."
Level 3 is able to offer services through many of the data center facilities not owned by the company by leveraging an advanced version of Ethernet technology, the mainstay of computer networks for more than two decades. Level 3 provides access to many of the non-Level 3 facilities using its new (3)CrossRoads EPOP (Ethernet Point of Presence) service. The service delivers high-speed, cost-effective Internet access over
Level 3\'s metropolitan networks. As a result, instead of waiting up to six months for a 45 Mbps access line,
(3)CrossRoads EPOP customers can get more than 20 times the access speed in just a few days, while avoiding expensive local loop fees. "(3)CrossRoads EPOP builds upon our (3)CrossRoads Internet access service and enables communications intensive businesses to use high-speed Ethernet Internet access without colocating in a Level 3 data center," said Brian Horsfield, vice president of Global IP Services for Level 3. "The EPOP service lowers bandwidth costs for bandwidth intensive companies by using an Ethernet interface, and by rewarding our customers for exchanging traffic on our network."
The Level 3 logo, (3)CrossRoads, (3)Link, (3)Voice, (3)Connect, and (3)Center are registered service marks of Level 3 Communications, Inc. in the United States and/or other countries.
